Emergency Dental Care

A dental emergency can be very distressing and disruptive for many patients. Often, there has been an unexpected and upsetting trauma event, or you may have had several sleepless nights with a toothache. At Willow Dental Care, we can offer our Norwest, Baulkham Hills, Bella Vista and Kellyville patients timely care with compassion and understanding.

What Is a Dental Emergency?

  • Facial swelling from a severe infection, which can become a life-threatening medical emergency
  • Swelling inside the mouth from an infection or abscess
  • Trauma to the mouth resulting in a tooth being broken or even knocked out
  • Soft tissue trauma to the mouth or gums
  • Severe, unrelenting pain from a tooth
  • Extremely sharp, lingering pain in a tooth from hot or cold
  • Severe jaw pain
  • Continuous bleeding from the gums

If you are experiencing any of the above, contact a medical professional or dentist immediately.

Other potentially less urgent issues that can occur are

  • Lost fillings
  • Lost crown
  • Broken fillings
  • Chipped teeth
  • Sensitivity to hot, cold and sweet

It is essential to have any concerns with your teeth addressed promptly to avoid escalating to a true emergency. Pain, infection, stress, inconvenience and even cost can be minimised if dental issues are managed early.

A regular check-up is the best way to maintain your teeth and avoid unpleasant surprises. At Willow Dental Care, we can advise you on any potential problems and talk through the best way to minimise future complications with your oral health and wellbeing.

Severe toothaches, infections or dental injuries can be incredibly painful. Emergency dental care focuses on getting you out of pain quickly with fast, targeted treatment, often within the same day.
Prevents Further Complications
Prompt care can make a big difference in saving a tooth or stopping an infection from spreading. The sooner a problem is treated, the less likely you are to need more extensive care later on.

Dental emergencies are stressful, but knowing you have a trusted dental team ready to help offers major peace of mind. Emergency dentistry gives you the care and clarity you need when it matters most.

Frequently Asked Questions

If you’re experiencing a dental emergency, your first step is to call your Norwest emergency dentist as soon as possible. At Willow Dental Care, we prioritise urgent cases and aim to fit you in quickly, often on the same day.

When you arrive, we’ll begin with a prompt but thorough examination to identify the source of your pain or injury. This may include digital x-rays to get a clear picture of what’s happening beneath the surface. Once we know the cause, we’ll explain your treatment options and focus on relieving your discomfort right away.

Depending on your situation, emergency treatment may include:

  • Pain relief and medication
  • Temporary or permanent fillings
  • Tooth repairs or replacements
  • Abscess drainage or infection control
  • Tooth reattachment (if you've brought in a knocked-out tooth)

Our goal is to stabilise your condition, stop the pain and prevent further damage, especially if there’s risk to surrounding teeth or tissues.

We understand emergencies can be overwhelming, so we’ll talk you through each step and make sure you feel supported and informed throughout your visit.

Dental Emergency? Please Call Us!

If something feels wrong, please don’t wait and call your emergency dentist in Norwest, NSW. Prompt care could mean the difference between saving or losing a tooth.

Try and find the fragment and bring it with you to the dentist as soon as possible.

We will endeavour to reattach the fragment or rebuild the tooth. If the nerve is exposed, a dressing against the nerve to help maintain and keep the nerve alive may be placed. Rest assured that at Willow Dental Care, we have the appropriate materials to repair and maintain the tooth the correct way. Some practices only carry materials that can cause the tooth to become grey over time.

What Should You Do If You or a Family Member has Knocked a Tooth Out?

First, please try to remain calm.

Baby tooth (usually children under six or so)

  • Do not try to reinsert a baby tooth. If you are unsure, place it in milk and call your dentist immediately on 8610 6697. Do not hold the tooth by its root.

Adult tooth (adults, teenagers and usually in children aged six and up)

  • If the tooth is dirty, rinse the tooth briefly in saline, such as eyewash if available in a first aid kit, or milk. Do not use water.

Try not to remove any tissue attached to the root of the tooth. It is essential to realise that the tooth's future depends on how quickly we can reimplant it. If you can, replant yourself. Make sure it's facing the right way. Then hold it in place with gauze, tissue or aluminium foil. We invite you to call us on 8610 6697 for assistance and advice as you complete this task.

If the tooth can't be replanted, please immediately call us on 8610 6697. Minimising the time the tooth is out of the mouth is critical, ideally less than 30 minutes. Place the tooth in saline or cold milk, and head over to Willow Dental Care.

A Fractured or Broken Tooth

Try and find the fragment and bring it with you to the dentist as soon as possible.

We will endeavour to reattach the fragment or rebuild the tooth. If the nerve is exposed, a dressing against the nerve to help maintain and keep the nerve alive may be placed. Rest assured that at Willow Dental Care, we have the appropriate materials to repair and maintain your tooth correctly. Some practices only carry materials that can cause the tooth to become grey over time.

Preventing Emergencies: Mouthguards for Extra Protection

A single case of dental trauma can lead to a lifetime of complex dental treatment and maintenance. A way to minimise the risk of a dental emergency from trauma is to use a professionally made mouthguard.

A boil-and-bite mouthguard will never be as effective in protecting your or your loved one's teeth, jaw and soft tissues as a custom-made professional mouthguard.

At Willow Dental Care, a custom mouthguard works by absorbing and spreading the impact of a blow to the mouth or jaw.

It's far more effective because it's made from an impression or scan of your mouth. Because it exactly matches the contours of your mouth, the fit is better, and you can breathe and speak more easily. An over-the-counter mouthguard in Norwest does not fit well, does not protect the teeth adequately and can even block the airway if it flies back on impact.

If you or your loved one is playing any kind of sport that could result in an accidental blow to the face, we invite you to call us immediately for help.

Health Safety and Infection Control

You can rest assured that at Willow Dental Care, we uphold the highest standards of safety and compliance in infection control for every procedure at every appointment.

We regularly attend professional infection control seminars so we can stay up to date with the latest advice to keep our patients and staff safe. In addition, we review our policies and carry out formal in-house staff training regularly.

We have the latest Lisa autoclave that uses steam and heat to sterilise all instruments and a dedicated tracking system. Where items cannot be sterilised, we use single-use disposable items. We have a comprehensive protocol for cleaning the surgery between patients.

Infection Control is something that often happens behind the scenes as far as patients are concerned. It requires diligence and expertise to clean surfaces and sterilise instruments. During treatments such as check-ups, fillings and root canal, you will see our commitment to using bagged sterilised instruments and retrieving additional equipment with dedicated sterile transfer tweezers. Check us out at your next appointment.

If you have any questions about how we keep you safe or would like a tour of our steri room, please let us know.

We put so much effort and care into our infection control procedures, and we would be happy to show you!
